NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES EXPLAINED

Do you believe in life after death?
Many people believe in ghosts and heaven, and about three in 100 Americans report actually having near-death experiences. These typically include an awareness of being dead, out-of-body experiences, meeting dead people, entering tunnels of light, and so on.
But these are stories and anecdotes; what does science have to say?
A new article published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences by neuroscientist Dean Mobbs, of the University of Cambridge's Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, and Caroline Watt, of the University of Edinburgh, finds that "contrary to popular belief, research suggests that there is nothing paranormal about these experiences. Instead, near-death experiences are the manifestation of normal brain function gone awry, during a traumatic, and sometimes harmless, event."
Mobbs and Watt noted that many classic NDE symptoms are actually reported by people who were never in danger of dying in the first place. This suggests that the perception that one is near death is traumatic and disturbing enough to cause some of the experiences.
Researcher Susan Blackmore, author of Dying to Live: Near-Death Experiences (Prometheus Books, 1993), notes that many NDEs (such as euphoria and the feeling of moving toward a tunnel of white light) are common symptoms of oxygen deprivation in the brain.
The new paper also discussed something called "walking corpse" syndrome, named after French neurologist Jules Cotard. Co-author Watt told Discovery News, "The sufferer feels that he or she is dead, even though not actually near death. It can be associated with trauma and some illnesses. It's not fully understood why individuals suffer from Cotard syndrome, but one possibility is that it's the brain's attempt to make sense of the strange experiences that the patient is having.
"This is relevant to NDEs because the near-death experience may also arise out of an attempt to interpret unusual physiological and psychological experiences, and the NDE includes the perception that one is not alive in the normal sense of the word."
Watt's research also busts another myth: that people have "returned from the dead" -- if by dead you mean clinical brain death.
No one has survived true clinical death (which is why the experiences are called near-death). Many people have been revived after their heart stopped for short periods of time -- around 20 minutes or more -- but anyone revived from brain death would be permanently and irreparably brain damaged and certainly unable to report their experiences.
"The idea of surviving clinical brain death is mythical," Watt said. "NDEs are sometimes reported after a person experiences some of the preliminary 'stages' of death -- for instance, when the heart stops beating for a while and the person is then revived. I think it's curious, however, that a survey has shown that 82 percent of individuals who have survived being actually near death do not report a near-death experience. That would seem to undermine the idea that these experiences give a glimpse into life after death."
Watt believes that near-death experiences hold an enduring fascination for people because they like the idea that humans survive bodily death.
"Some people find this a comforting idea," Watt said, "because it suggests we are not simply like other biological organisms on our planet."
The fact that near-death experiences can be chemically induced and explained by neurological mechanisms suggests a natural -- instead of supernatural -- cause.

  1. This is very interesting . I always knew it wasn't really a near death experience but the brains way of trying to predict what is going on . although this is true I wonder why this doesn't happen to all people that survive nearly dying . I also would like to know how the brain does this. Humans use only about 10% of their brains full potential , I wonder if this exploits other parts of the brain we usually don't use

  2. I do believe in life after death..but yes this is very interesting to learn about. the brain predicts what it think its going to happen. it weird because nobody knows when death is coming. i would want to know how the brain works as in how it thinks of things like this.

  4. I don't know if there is life after death, however i think it is interesting that near-death experiences are basically dreams. I have heard alot of stories of people near death and them seeing heaven. I think some cases may actually be true but most are like what the article reported.

  5. Its really cool that someone could die for like a couple minutes and experience near death. But they still alive but its like they are dreaming kind of. Its like they left their body but not really. Its weird to experience heaven when basically you are still alive.

  6. I do believe life after death. Like in heaven, when you die and if you go to heaven, people say you can look over people and youre healthier than when you was alive.

  7. I don't think its normal when people say that these things happen, but I do believe in life after death. I believe in God and everything, so I don't think it is totally unormal for this to happen.

  8. i think this would be a good but weird experience. i think its weird that someone can experience almost being dead. i do believe that when you die you will go to heaven and you're healthy. but to me this seems as though you shouldn't have to experience this. you are suppose to die when you die, not by this experience.

  9. This is very interesting to me. That someone can actually come back to life! Not breathing to breathing. But I dont beleive that the near death expierences are real, I dont think people see whats its like in heaven or hell. I think they make it up for the popularity. I believe that the only time you see these things is when you die.

  10. these near death experiences is pretty cool! I like to think there is life after death. I'm a Christian so I believe in heaven. I like to think that before you die you see your love ones waiting for you and your love ones in real life. i love these sorts of stories but sometime I don't always believe them

  11. I don't know about life after death. It's confusing but regardless of what this say I do believe in ghosts and paranormal activity. I also believe you can experience heaven and come back. Although this is interesting to read about.

  12. First off, is there a pattern here with dead? Anyways so this seems to be pretty cool and "scientific". I mean persoally I don't believe in an all mighty being or paranormal spirits called ghost. I've heard stories but I never really believed in a " near-death" experience either but seeing this now I'd like to reconsider some of the stories I have heard. All this being said I'd feel like this experience could make a person better and stop some bad thongs they might have done but what if they lost their mind because they couldn't really believe what they saw. I'd rather just not have one of these to be honest and just leave it to the proffesionals on this one.

  13. I think that this is very interesting. It's cool how someone can experience death but not die. At the same time im confused if these people are telling the truth or lieing to get popularity. You never know if it real or not until you die and can experience it yourself.

  14. I believe in life after death and this is kinda scary for me. I also believe in ghost nd paranormal so I don't like reading things about it. I think it's creepy to know what happens after death. I don't really want to know anything until it happens and I experience it for myself.

  15. I believe in life after death. I believe in ghost and spirits but i get paranoid a lot thinking about it. I don't want to imagine what it would be like until it's happening. It's a scary thought but we will alll eventuallly find out if it is true or not.

  17. I hate thinking about life after death and things like that. It freaks me out because what if there is nothing after death? Like you just die and nothing else. It's so creepy.

  18. I don't think we will ever know what truly happens after death. I don't think near death experiences are real because people lie all the time or they are just trying to believe something that may not actually be happening. It makes sense to me that the brain can make you believe or see certain things after a traumatic experience. I don't really know if I believe in an after life or paranormal activity. Although, I do think this is a very interesting.

  19. It would be crazy to experience death without really dying. I believe in life after death, but I dont think its anyway to get the real experience of death until you really die. I believe in spirits but I dont believe in "ghost". I think the idea of a "ghost" is all made in ones head.

  20. I don't think that scientists will ever be able to discover what happens after death. I dont believe in ghost or demons, but i do believe in angels and God. Is't it impossible to realize what happens after death?

  22. All these stories about near death is very interesting to me but yet I don't want to experience near death. I get so scared thinking about even dying. I do believe in life after death and i believe in ghost also spirits. I think that people near death experience this because they want to tell us not to be afraid of dying.
