FYI: Could Scientists Really Create a Zombie Apocalypse Virus?

Dead Head Infectious proteins called prions could shut down parts of the brain and leave others intact, creating a zombie. iStock
Maybe, but it’s not going to be easy. In West African and Haitian vodou, zombies are humans without a soul, their bodies nothing more than shells controlled by powerful sorcerers. In the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, an army of shambling, slow-witted, cannibalistic corpses reanimated by radiation attack a group of rural Pennsylvanians. We are looking for something a little in between Haiti and Hollywood: an infectious agent that will render its victims half-dead but still-living shells of their former selves.

See our gallery of real live zombies in nature.
An effective agent would target, and shut down, specific parts of the brain, says Steven C. Schlozman, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard University and author of The Zombie Autopsies, a series of fictional excerpts from the notebooks of “the last scientist sent to the United Nations Sanctuary for the study of ANSD,” a zombie plague. Schlozman explained to PopSci that although the walking dead have some of their motor skills intact—walking, of course, but also the ripping and tearing necessary to devour human flesh—the frontal lobe, which is responsible for morality, planning, and inhibiting impulsive actions (like taking a bite out of someone), is nonexistent. The cerebellum, which controls coordination, is probably still there but not fully functional. This makes sense, since zombies in movies are usually easy to outrun or club with a baseball bat.
The most likely culprit for this partially deteriorated brain situation, according to Schlozman, is as simple as a protein. Specifically, a proteinaceous infectious particle, a prion. Not quite a virus, and not even a living thing, prions are nearly impossible to destroy, and there’s no known cure for the diseases they cause.
The first famous prion epidemic was discovered in the early 1950s in Papua New Guinea, when members of the Fore tribe were found to be afflicted with a strange tremble. Occasionally a diseased Fore would burst into uncontrollable laughter. The tribe called the sickness “kuru,” and by the early ’60s doctors had traced its source back to the tribe’s cannibalistic funeral practices, including brain-eating.
Prions gained notoriety in the 1990s as the infectious agents that brought us bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease. When a misshapen prion enters our system, as in mad cow, our mind develops holes like a sponge. Brain scans from those infected by prion-based diseases have been compared in appearance to a shotgun blast to the head.
Now, if we’re thinking like evil geniuses set on global destruction, the trick is going to be attaching a prion to a virus, because prion diseases are fairly easy to contain within a population. To make things truly apocalyptic, we need a virus that spreads quickly and will carry the prions to the frontal lobe and cerebellum. Targeting the infection to these areas is going to be difficult, but it’s essential for creating the shambling, dim-witted creature we expect.
Jay Fishman, director of transplant infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, proposes using a virus that causes encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain’s casing. Herpes would work, and so would West Nile, but attaching a prion to a virus is, Fishman adds, “a fairly unlikely” scenario. And then, after infection, we need to stop the prion takeover so that our zombies don’t go completely comatose, their minds rendered entirely useless. Schlozman suggests adding sodium bicarbonate to induce metabolic alkalosis, which raises the body’s pH and makes it difficult for proteins like prions to proliferate. With alkalosis, he says, “you’d have seizures, twitching, and just look awful like a zombie."

  1. I actually remember reading an article a few weeks back talking about this, but more along the lines of how a zombie apocalypse would be impossible because of the effects everything had on their brains. I guess if scientist were to make a virus to work, it would take a lot of time to find the right things to help create it. But also, why would someone even want to create a virus that can make someone a zombie? I mean yeah, the idea may seem neat and interesting now but later on, I highly doubt that people will like the outcome; if it does work, that is.

  2. thats crazy if we really had zombies in real like but i don't understand why somebody would do that? that could kill a lot of people which wouldn't be good but its still kinda intereting and cool that might really exist.

  3. This is a really cool ideal. But if someone does get the prion with the virus , everything would go very bad. Population would decrease alot. This is a interesting thought but not if its true. But this shows me how much scientist can do. Nothing is impossible in the world of science.

  4. I think its a bad idea cause it could affect every one. And mess up the human brain really baddly. I wouldnt understand why anyone would want that disease because you would twitch and have seizures. And i think it isnt really worth it. Its a stupid idea for anyone to do. From watching The Walking Dead being a zombie would be very scary.

  5. i think this is a horrible idea because this could be very bad for everyone in the population. it wouldnt be a very bright idea to have creates that eat other people running around towns. i think this would end up like the walking dead because it would be a town infested in zombies. i think that they would think they have it under control but it would go completely down hill. i think anyone who is wanting to try this is kinda dumb and needs to think of the outcome of this.

  6. They probaly could make a zombie virus but i dont understand why would they. It could spread and spread them take over most of the world and everyone would die and the earth wouldn't be the same

  7. I think this isn't a good idea, because it would have a negative effect on everyone. The world could be taken over.

  8. I think it is a bad idea. Why would you want to turn regualr people into zombies? It would put the rest of us in danger and make life scary. I would not like to see zombies walking around casually. That is a cool idea though.

  9. I feel like this is actually pretty amazing. The thought of all friends and family possibly dying though sucks. One thing that could start an apocalyptic situation though is maybe genetic remastering of the brain and make them forget everything and just only want to walk and eat, having of course a hefty craving for human flesh and other meats. I hop scientist does this and I really hope it doesn't just leak out. The imagination of this happening though is expanded but actually doing and the possibility of it happening...Meh idk

  10. i don't understand why they are creating a disease, like, zombies are a problem. they shouldn't be taking their time making zombies, they should be finding cures for cancer and others. knowing that scientist are trying to find a way to create a zombie is freaky.

  11. I have thought about, what if a zombie apocalypse does happen. I mean, who would do such a thing. Why would someone want to make a virus that could kill hundreds of thousands of people, or more?

  12. This isn't a good idea because it would cause many problems. People would either die or have severe brain problems. Why would anyone even want this to be tested on them? Scientists should be finding cures and medicines for diseases not creating a virus to kill more people. I'd prefer to watch movies and shows about zombies not live like one.

  13. In my opinion I suggested that creating non-useful viruis to turn regular humans into zombies is a horrible idea. Because scientists could possibly find a cure and/or medicines for the diseases. Instead of killing more humans.

  14. I think this is a bad idea, why would you want to turn normal people into zombies. That would just raise the chance of more people dieing. People would live in fear because they aren't used to zombies around the world. It would just turn one human into eating other humans.

  15. I think this is a very creative thing. But it's a very bad idea because it can affect the population and the brain. It would be really scary knowing that there's zombies walking around. I also think if they created a virus to make humans into zombies they should also make a virus to make you back to a human just in case you don't like the zombie life.
