SCIENTISTS CAN TRICK YOU INTO THINKING YOU’RE INVISIBLE

THE ILLUSION COULD ONE DAY HELP PEOPLE CONQUER THEIR FEARS

Bringing Hogwarts to Life
Staffan Larsson
Ph.D. student Zakaryah Abdulkarim, M.D., shows how to create the illusion of invisibility in the lab.
It looks like Muggles have finally caught up with the wizarding world. Neuroscientists from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet gave 125 study participants the illusion of being invisible.
The researchers described the invisibility illusion in the journal Scientific ReportsFor the experiment, a participant stands and wears a head-mounted display, which plays a real-time video feed from a camera pointed down at an empty space nearby. So when the participant looks down, she sees an empty space instead of her body. The scientist touches various locations on the participant’s body with a large paintbrush. At the same time, with a paintbrush in his opposite hand, he imitates these motions in mid-air beneath the camera. The participant simultaneously feels the brush poke and sees the brush poking into empty space. The trick leads to a Harry Potter-like sensation of invisibility. Off to Hagrid’s!
Arvid Guterstam, the lead author of the study, explains in a press release, “Within less than a minute, the majority of the participants started to transfer the sensation of touch to the portion of empty space where they saw the paintbrush move and experienced an invisible body in that position.”
To test how well the illusion worked, the researchers made stabbing motions with a knife toward the empty space that represented the invisible body. When participants were under the spell of the illusion, they perceived these jabs as threats to their invisible bodies, and their sweat and heart rates were elevated. But when the illusion was broken--for instance, when the brushstrokes they felt and those they saw weren't in sync--they weren't unnerved by the knife.
Interestingly, the illusion of being invisible changed participants' responses during stressful situations. The researchers positioned the participants in front of a virtual audience of strangers, measuring their heart rate and self-reported stress levels. Unsurprisingly, participants were less stressed when they thought they were invisible.
So basically, pretending you’re invisible seems to be a more effective way to handle stage fright than imagining everyone in their underwear.
Looking ahead, the researchers hope to find out what else an illusion of invisibility might affect. This study might be useful for social anxiety disorder therapies or to examine decision-making. The study’s principal investigator Henrik Ehrsson says, “Follow-up studies should also investigate whether the feeling of invisibility affects moral decision-making, to ensure that future invisibility cloaking does not make us lose our sense of right and wrong, which Plato asserted over two millennia ago.”

  1. Finally my childhood in a class blog. I think it is actually pretty good because this gives this people with a lot of talent but have anxiety a chance to show how good they are and be a part of the world. This "Invisibility" could be more than just some prank to pull on a friend, it could also help with peoples anxiety because experiencing "Invisibility" shows that some people were less nervous so if they realize they weren't it could help them cope with the idea of public areas and situations

  3. I always like invisibility. But i want to know how long does it last. Also if it is useful for social anxiety disorders therapies, why wont they start using it. This is a great idea, but it will get out of hand.

  4. Everyone has thought about or wanted to be invisible once in there like time. Its the coolest thing ever. Id love to be on of the people getting to try and do this experiment an see how it feels.

  5. I think this would be helpful to most children to america, and yes it could change someones mind whether, and possibly get rid of they're fears. I've never really cared if i was invisible or not but alot of other kids do or maybe even adults.

  6. This is a great idea! It could help people with anxiety and would be cool to be invisible. It is weird to think that everyones dream as a child is coming true. I would want to try it atleast once.

  7. I think it's cool how illusions like this work. This would be helpful to so many people and it would be fun to try out. Many people have always wondered what it's like to have invisibility powers so I like the idea that people can now experience this. It was a very good idea and I hope this is something we will see more of in the future.

  8. this is amazing! I would love to test this out and to become invisible. Its nice that use it for people who have anxiety. Anxiety is a bad disorder and its just so sweet that they can get them to disappear. I would love to turn invisible myself though.

  9. This is an amazing idea and as a child everyone once thought of the idea of invisible. How long does it last? I'd like to try to experience this idea of invisible.

  10. I think this is a very cool! It's amazing to see how illusion can work in this kind of way. I would like to know if this was used for anxiety disorder would it be used each time they go to theory? It would not only be useful but really fun for lots of people.

  11. I Think this would be a great idea I always love of the idea of being invisible. So who wouldn't love being invisible at bad times , but I think this would be a very good idea and cool at the same time .. I hope I see this more in the future.

  12. I think this is great for people with stage fright and social anxiety. If they are under the illusion they are invisible they can overcome so many obstacles and have an easier time adjusting to public sistuations. Its especially great for people with social anxiety because after feeling invisible and making friends that way, they can gain enough confidence to without the illusion.

  13. I think this amazing and useful because some times you don't want to deal with a lot of people you can be invisible and I think it will help a lot of people and also cool that its a real illusion and a cool one that a lot of people would be interested in

  16. This is amazing to me. When i was younger i always wished to be invisible. You could avoid so much stuff when your invisible, like people you dont want to see. But being invisible could cause many crimes like thief cause they couldn't see them.

  17. That is incredible. If we are able to make people invisible, it would do alot for science and maybe the army. It would completely change the world forever.

  18. I think this is really cool. Ive always wanted to know how I can be invisible. If we could be Invisible i would love it because you can excape your problems and ect. This would be cool to try if it was real.

  19. I think this is a really cool idea but it could get out of control. I feel like people would use it for the wrong reasons. I also feel as though it could help people who have anxiety problems. I think it'd be worth testing.

  20. Every single child at one point has always played the game where you sneak around and act like you are invisible. This could be a good invention but it could also be a very bad invention, if it was used in the wrong ways.

  21. Science is getting more and more advanced. I like how they used invisibly as a way to help cope with fears. Hopefully in the future, this method will help plenty of people.

  22. I think this is so cool! I have always wanted to be invisible for a day. I wonder what they will come up with next. I think this could also be a bad thing to, people could be invisible then comit crimes then no one would know who it was. Other then that I think it's wonderful.

  23. I want to do this not because I want to get over my fear, but because I simply want to be invisible and cause a lot of trouble. This is so neat. I'm glad science is coming along this far.
