Woolly Mammoth DNA Successfully Spliced Into Elephant Cells

A group of researchers are getting closer to bringing the extinct woolly mammoth back to life. Geneticist George Church’s lab at Harvard University successfully copied genes from frozen woolly mammoths and pasted them into the genome of an Asian elephant.
Using a DNA editing tool called CRISPR, the scientists spliced genes for the mammoths’ small ears, subcutaneous fat, and hair length and color into the DNA of elephant skin cells. The tissue cultures represent the first time woolly mammoth genes have been functional since the species went extinct around 4,000 years ago.
The research has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a scientific journal “because there is more work to do,” Church told the U.K.’s Sunday Times, “but we plan to do so.”
The work is part of an effort to bring extinct species back from the dead, a process called “de-extinction”. The recent breakthrough shows that one proposed de-extinction method--which involves splicing genes from extinct animals into the genomes of their living relatives--just might work. But don't believe the headlines suggesting woolly mammoth cloning is just around the corner. Church explained to Popular Science that there’s a lot more research to be done.
“Just making a DNA change isn’t that meaningful,” says Church. “We want to read out the phenotypes.” To do that, the team needs to figure out how to take the flat hybrid cells from a petri dish and coax them into becoming specialized tissues--such as blood cells or liver organoids--then test to see if they behave properly. For example, do the mammoth hair genes lead to hair that's the right color, length, and woolliness?
If those tests go well, the team hopes to turn the elephant/mammoth skin cells into hybrid embryos that can be grown in artificial wombs, devices that allow for pregnancies outside of an animal's uterus. Artificial wombs are pretty speculative at this point, but the alternative--implanting the hybrids into the wombs of female elephants--is unsavory to animal rights activists as well as geneticists. “It’s going to be more humane and easier if we can set up hundreds of [embryos] in an incubator and run tests,” says Church.
If they can get the hybrid creatures to survive, the project's first goal will be to engineer an elephant that can survive in cold temperatures. The team thinks that expanding the elephant’s range into colder climates could help keep it away from humans and the conflicts that are threatening to make Asian and African elephants extinct. Later, after the engineered elephants gain a foothold, Church says the team will try to revive the mammoths by integrating higher amounts of mammoth DNA into the hybrids.

Of course, it's possible the mammoth genome will never be completely reconstructed, and the creatures will only remain elephant/mammoth hybrids. But if it looks like a mammoth and fulfills the same ecological functions as a mammoth, is it a mammoth? What even is a mammoth, anyway?

  1. I honestly think this kinda werid that they use Mannoth's ears and subcutaneous fat and hair into a elephant DNA skin cells. But the team thinks that expanding the elephant's range into colder climates could keep it away from humans and the conflicts that are threatening to make Asia and Africa elephants extinct , So this can actually be a good idea.

  2. I can guess they related without using a DNA test because of their body and how they look. They are both big, similar body shape, and they both a long nostril. The only difference is that the mammoth has horns and an elephant does not.

  3. This is really cool that they are bringing a extinct animal back to life. Maybe they can do dinosaurs like this too. This is very interesting to me and is crazy how far technology comes now days!

  4. I agree with Alec, i find it very interesting that an extinct animal could be brought back. I do also find this a little weird though, technology has come far over all the years.

  5. Is this such a good idea, to bring back an extinct animal? I mean, if they actually could do it, it would be an amazing break through in science, but I also believe it could be a bit dangerous more than anything else. I just think we need to be careful.

  6. I find this really cool, i also agree with alec. I think it is really cool they can bring a extinct animal back to life. But also both of these animals look very similar. The only difference is the horns that the mammoth has.

  7. This is a really good idea. Elephants are the closest thing to a woolly mammoth that we have. It is really cool that they can bring an extinct animal back to life by creating a new one with genes. It is also kind of creepy to think they can recreate animals.

  8. I think this would be really cool. if scientists can bring back an extinct I think they should do it. but did they go extinct for a reason? I feel like this would take a while before they do this. what if they get there hopes up for something that might even really be possible? the next thing we know is we are going to be bringing back people from the dead. although I do think this is cool that they've found this information, I don't think they should actually proceed with it

  9. I think this would be an amazing accomplishment by scientists if they did this. I never would have thought bringing an extinct animal back was possible. The process of bringing the mammoth back would probably take a long time. I hope this is something scientists will eventually be able to do and this would show how advanced in technology we have become.

  10. Science has never failed to amaze me. I think it would be so cool if they were able to accomplish this, and it'd be even better if it was around my time. I just wonder about the conditions in life now compared to 4,000 years ago when mammoths were around. There is a lot of things different so I wonder if it would actually be able to survive?

  11. This would be so amazing if this work. They are always come up with great ideas and new inventions. Scientists always find a new way for everything. I hope they could do this cause mammoths would be awesome to see in person like at the zoo.

  12. A woolly mammoth would be really cool too see but I am wondering what we would do with it...and what the present day elephants would do. But I would still love to see one mammoth but they would probably go extinct again, and what would happen if the elephants and mammoths don't get along? What if the mammoths are really aggressive and they threaten our wildlife? I am saying this is an awesome idea but it go completely wrong.

  13. I think this is really cool. If they were to bring mammoths back, i would like to see one in person. bringing an dead mammoth back alive is kind of weird to me because i can come back and be aggressive towards anybody and anything can happen! If they were to bring it back to life, I would really want to go see it somewhere.

  14. this is cool that could possibly bring mammoths back to life. even though I don't think it would be right to mess around and bring something back that was demolished couple years back. Bringing them back could actually be sad though, because they wouldn't be treated right by how humans are today, b not putting them in the wild.

  15. Should an extinct species really be brought back to life through genetics ? Scientists need to consider and research all of the negative outcomes. Even if they did that, the future isn't known because I don't think anyone has recreated an extinct species.

  16. This is really cool that they are bringing a extinct animal back to life. We can have more animal. Which increase our population. I think this is a really good idea.

  17. It would be really cool if they can bring it back. I would love to see this woolly mammoth. If it went extinct though wouldnt it just go extinct again. They're basically bringing it back to show it off. Zoo life isnt good for the species. and i know they arent about to let them loose in the wild.

  18. I think it would be cool to see a woolly mammoths cause they are big unique I think they can be used to help humans and cool to bring them back
