World's Tiniest Chameleons Found in Madagascar

Smallest Lizard A juvenile Brookesia micra is barely bigger than a match head.

This little chameleon is one of four miniature lizards identified in Madagascar, adding to our growing list of amazingly teeny animals. The one on the match in this picture is a juvenile, but even the adults max out at 30 millimeters. They're the smallest lizards in the world, and some of the smallest vertebrates found to date.

The Lilliputian lizard is near the lower limits of size in vertebrate animals. Learning about how these creatures live can put some constraints on animal morphology — if your species has eyes, a backbone and a brain, there’s likely a limit to how little you can get. A different group of field biologists just announced the world’s smallest frog, and they claim it is the smallest vertebrate in the world, knocking a tiny Indonesian fish off the pedestal of puniness.

The chameleons are related to other Madagascan lizards, but DNA analysis showed they have enough genetic differences to count as distinct species, according to the researchers who found them, led by Frank Glaw of the Zoological State Collection of Munich. The animals live in leafy undergrowth in Madagascan forests.

Tiny and camouflaged — how did they find these guys? Most of the lizards were collected at night, when they typically climb up into the underbrush to roost. The field biologists used torches and headlamps to spot the sleeping lizards, according to their paper.

  1. I think it is interesting an animal can be that small. They are in danger of being killed even in camouflage because thet can be unknowingly stepped on. I wonder if there is another animal smaller than that.

  2. Im surprised that they have found yhe worlds smallest lizard. People would probably think that this species is extinct because of how small it is and it could be killed easily.

  3. I find it interesting an animal that size can be found. It could easily be killed. I don't think that camoflage really helps this animal because it is so small. It can be stepped on by accident. This is a cool lizard but there are probably not very many of them.

  4. Its so tiny, its so ugly its adorable. I wonder how it survives when its that small. It would make a great pet for longer kids and parents that dont want big animals. But its very unique and interesting.

  5. Yes it is very intersting this was found. I think maybe the its size could help it because less animals would notice it and because its also camoflauge.

  6. this is so cute. I want to go to Madagascar so I can see this chameleon. I used to have an anole when I was younger but it died. I think it's also scary for them to be around because people could easily step on them and they wouldn't even know.

  7. Being such as small species, their resources sjould be plentiful. They are able to have a larger population for a long time because it would take a long time for resources to become scarce. I wonder if they have any physical differences than regilar chameleons, other than their size. They are very cute and I would love to have one as a pet.

  8. I think this is so cute and I would love to have a chameleon, though I don't know about that size. I love lizards and I think they're the coolest thing. I have a crested gecko right now and he's awesome.
Being as small as that one though is a major advantage because there would be a lot less predators.

  9. That's awesome that there are so many tiny animals these days. I don't get how they are even able to become that small but its really cool. Before you know it, we will have tiny little bears and things like that.

  10. It was probably really hard to find them since they are so tiny. That is really cool that an animal can be that small. They are probably going to die off quick because they are so small but hopefully they preserve them. I would love to see one.

  11. This would be awesome to have as a pet but good luck knowing where he is to feed him. He would constantly get lost and who would ever know if he was still living with you. Still this is one of the latest species (assuming this is based on recent events) found to date and honestly I am jsut sitting here wondering what else there is the world that we havent seen yet, we havent been too far underground, I wonder what could all be down there or maybe in a volcano or something in the sea. The world is full of suprises and I just cant wait to see them all cause I know something wil just catch my attetnion like this did today.

  12. I would love to really see and hold one of these chameleons. The fact that they are camouflaged makes it seem like they wouldn't have trouble trying to survive at all but because of their size many die by getting stepped or maybe even mistaken for something else. This makes me wonder how many other small animals there are that nobody has even seen yet.

  13. I would really like to see one in person and i would like to hold one also. The only thing that i would have trouble with this is that i could lose it easily. Also its amazing that something so small can be camouflaged.

  15. Its very interesting that lizards/ animals/ vertabrites can be that small. It surprises me that they actually spotted this creature and caught it. Its amazing what sorts of organisms mother nature has inside her. Now that i know about it i want to touch it and see it in person. This is one of mother natures finest specimen.

  16. I think it is really cool that they found the worlds smallest chameleon. I think it would be cool to have a chameleon as a pet because he can hide and go camouflage.

  17. Awww, it's so cute. But it would be hard to keep as a pet since you could easily lose it with how tiny it is. It's also kinda scary because there probably isn't that many out there left in existance.

  18. That's cute, their so tiny it's adorable. I think it would be cool to have one as a pet. The only bad thing is they would get lost so easily. If scientist can mind a tiny lizard what else could they find?

  20. It's so tiny. Very interesting how a chameleon can be that small. I wonder how they found it since it's so tiny, did they use something special to find it?And I wonder what they feed it so it stay's alive. Do they just give it liquid or solid foods? I think they should try to find more of these tiny chameleons or try to get this one alive since it's so tiny.

  21. its amazing how tiny they are! I wouldn't consider it as a pet though because of the chameleon being so tiny and can camouflage itself, it would easily be lost and be killed. Because of them being so tiny, they can die very easily, causing its population to go down. I think these chameleons are adorable and I would love to hold one but I wouldn't think they would last very long
