A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. And a new species of Amorphophallus—the genus that includes the "corpse flower"—still smells like rotting meat and feces.
Discovered on an island off the coast of Madagascar, the newfound plant grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) high and blooms once a year with a "really foul" stench, according to discoverer Greg Wahlert, a postdoctoral researcher in botany at the University of Utah.
Lynn Bohs, a biology professor in the same lab as Wahlert, described the smell in a statement as a combination of "rotting roadkill" and a "Porta Potty."
The new flower adds to the roughly 170 species in the Amorphophallus genus, which means "misshapen penis" in Greek after the phallic shape of the plants' flowers.
Finding Flower a Stroke of Luck
Wahlert discovered the new species—named A. perrieri—in full bloom while collecting violets in two remote islands northwest of Madagascar in 2006 and 2007.
Suspecting the plant might be a new species, he brought back samples and began cultivating them. After consulting with an Amorphophallus expert in the Netherlands, he confirmed that A. perrieri was a previously undescribed species.
Because A. perrieri is dormant for much of the year, Wahlert's discovery is a case of good timing.
For months out of the year, there's little rain in that part of Madagascar, so the plants remain dormant underground.
"These things are growing out of the most miserable soil," said Wahlert, who is working on a scientific paper about the species.
The specimen he is cultivating in the university's greenhouse shot up its flower in just two weeks. If Wahlert had been visiting the islands at a different time, "I could have very easily missed it."
Stinky Flowers "Fascinating"
All Amorphophallus species emit smells to attract flies and other insects.
Though a few emit more pleasant aromas, such as chocolate or spices, most smell terrible to human noses, Wahlert said.
"You can imagine in Africa, where big game will die and rot in the sun ... that's what they smell like," Wahlert said.
Despite the stench, he added, "I'm glad I got a stinky one. It's fascinating to me.
this is pretty gross actually. I hope that they stay where they came from because they stink and attract bugs. they attack flies and I think flies are like the worst bug. I can't believe a flower smells like that and it's like a rose.
ReplyDeleteI thought that best Valentines day flower would be the rose. This flower doesnt make sense why would you give this to a woman, she probably wouldnt like it or take it because its going to attract bugs and other insects and it stinks.
ReplyDeleteI would say the best flower is the rose. I dont think any female would want this because it attracts bugs and stinks. This is probably the worst flower you could give to a female on Valentines day. This flower should stay where it comes from.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the best flower is the rose, if this flower smells like this most people would probably not want to dela with it.
ReplyDeleteIf my parents ever get this flwer and it stinks up the house, im going to throw it away immediately. But i do agree that the rose is the best flower. Also i bet that in madascagar it really stinks in the area where they grow. I would also like to learn more about this flower.
ReplyDeleteI find this disgusting. I would never want anyone to give this to me as a present. People should just stick with the basic flowers because giving someone a flower the stinks and will attract bugs isn't the best gift.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty grose that plants can develop like that. Nobody wants a flower that stinks really bad. But its still cool that the even discovered a plant that even has the ability to make this smell. It doesn't have to worry about anything trying to eat it.
ReplyDeleteThat is a bad flower to give to your valentine. I didnt know flowers could smell bad, but this is another level. I wonder if anyone has tried to give it away as a gift.
ReplyDeleteI think this is everything but what to get a loved one for valentines Mr. Dunn. I do however find it quite interesting that a plant would smell of a Porta potty or roadkill, let alone both. This is a very minor discovery for I doubt that too many many people would be too into the fact that it stinks and then be done with it. However, who knows this plant could actually hold benificial factors for us. This new plant could help find the certain cure for a disease that has stumped scientists. To be honest though I'd never let a plant that has the name "Mishappen Penis" inside of my body wether it cured a disease or not.
ReplyDeleteWho would ever buy this plant? this flower isnt even pretty and it stinks. I would break up with my boyfriend if he got me that. I would not take this flower. It looks like the plant has like a mini brain in the middle of it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the flower uses it's stench to defend itself from bees that want is nectar or butterflies. If they smell the odor, they would stay away from it. I would like to know how far away you could smell the flower, since it stinks so bad. It's not pretty to me though.
ReplyDeletenot the best looking flower I seen. it has a pretty purple color but it isn't a great looking flower, including its smell. its great they found a new plant but people usually like flowers and roses for their smell and looks.
ReplyDeleteI still currently believe the rose is the best Valentine's flowe. Not this porta potty. in which smells like rotting meat and feces. This flower would make me feel sick I hate strong stink odor and it also upset my stomach.
ReplyDeleteI thought the rose would be the best flower because that's what you normally see, but i guess not. I dont think girls would like to receive a flower that smells bad and stinks.
ReplyDeleteI think this flower would be the worse valentines gift ever ! What girl would want a stinky flower and the flower isn't cute itself. I think its wonderful that they found this type of flower because its very unique but I would not want that to be my gift for valentines day.
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting and disgusting at the same time. This would be awful to receive because it smells really bad and it would take up a lot of space since it's so tall. What's even worse about this flower is it attracts bugs. I hope this flower doesn't ever start growing here.
ReplyDeleteI'm not even sure what to say. If someone ever got this for me I would probably hit them with it. Finding this thing was not luck at all, it was just... I don't know, but certainly not luck.
ReplyDeleteI think it is weird that someone would think this is the perfect Valentines Day flower. I hope it will never start to grow in America. I dont think any girl would want this flower over a rose.
ReplyDeleteThis is the worst flower to give someone especially on valentines day. I think no person would want this flower I hope my parent never get this
