Scientists have now discovered the gene responsible for creating a four-leaf clover, using molecular markers, according to research published in the July/August 2010 edition of Crop Science.
The white clover plant is actually a genetically complex organism. The gene for four leaves is rarely expressed and environmental factors also contribute. So the answer for why four-leaf clovers exist in white clover is a combination of a rare gene and environmental conditions.
It has been hard to discover the gene up until now because it is hidden by the allele for three leaves. The use of molecular markers made the discovery possible.

(NOTE: I decided that since St. Patrick’s day was moved to the 15th, but is generally on the 17th, I would split the difference and post my themed post on the 16th)
Four-leaf clovers: the rare, sought-after variation of the more common three-leaf clover. It is said to be lucky, and indeed, you’d be lucky to find them. Some statistics state that there are 10,000 normal three-leaf clovers to every four-leaf clover.
I somehow think that is a little exaggerated. I myself have found 3 four-leaf clovers in my life time… mostly before I was out of grade school and had plenty of time to gaze at the grass where White clover, Trifolium repens, grew.
Some people try to claim they’ve found a four-leaf clover, but often they have just picked the leaf of a plant that consistently produces four-leaves, such as Pepperwort (Marsilea Quadrifolia) or Oxalis (any variety).
But what causes a true clover to produce this variation? Obviously it is a variation— the scientific name for clover, Trifolium, means three (tres) leaf (folium). A real four-leaf clover also has a fourth leaf that is often smaller than the rest.
The truth of the matter is that scientists are unsure of the exact cause of four-leaf clovers, and indeed, there may be more than one factor causing this variation. However, here is a list of possible causes.
- Environmental:
To suggest an environmental factor, seekers of the lucky leaflet have found that certain patches of clover were more likely to have four-leaf clovers. This occurrence suggests that environmental factors such as soil pH, soil composition, pollution of the area, or other influencing factors. Some suggest that environmental stressors produce more variation, but this is unknown.
- Genetic:
Taking into consideration the rarity of the four-leaf cover, it is possible that the variation is not so much a mutation, but a recessive gene that crops up occasionally. Personally, I think this a little unlikely. I would expect to see a little more four-leaf clovers. There also exist variations with more than four leaves, which is not explained with genetics naming a single gene.
- Mutation:
This one is my favorite possibility for the origin of the four-leaf clover. All multi-cellular organisms have some mutation occurring. Mutation is a fun word, but it is a good thing and creates variation within a population. Mutations are “changes to the nucleotide sequence of the genetic material of an organism.” Basically, a mutated organism is just a little different from its fellows. In four-leaf clovers, the mutation is most likely somatic, meaning the mutation occurs in the somatic cells. Somatic mutations in plants
can sometimes be are not passed down to their offspring. They are mutations that occur after the plant is started.
- All of the above:
It is possible that in some specimens of four-leaf clovers, more than one of these factors contributed to the variation.
Good luck with finding the four-leaf clover. Most people associate the white clover as the true shamrock, although shamrock simply means “little clover”. Other sources say each of the leaves mean something, like hope, faith, love, and happiness.
I heard that if you get a four leaf clover, you get good luck. I really dont know if its true or not because i never have gotten a four leaf clover, ive only got the three leaf clovers.
ReplyDeleteI think if you find a four leaf clover that you get good luck. However, i have not found a four leaf clover. I have only saw three leaf ones. I also think that there is 10,000 three leaf clovers to every four leaf clover. Because i always find three leaf clovers.
ReplyDeleteFour-leaf clover are said to be lucky, and indeed, you’d be lucky to find them. Some statistics state that there are 10,000 normal three-leaf clovers to every four-leaf clover. I personally haven't found a four left clover. But hopefully I will find on so I would have good luck. I only seen the three-left clover.
ReplyDeleteI have also heard that 4 leaf clovers are said to have good luck. I personally have never found one but I hope to find one one day. I have seen many 3 leaf clovers but never a four leaf one.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there is something about the soil in Ireland. When you think of St.Patrick's Day, you think about these clovers. Maybe they are easier to find in Ireland due to the soil pH or composition. I have never found one, but I hope to.
ReplyDeleteI have never found a four leaf clover cause they are extremely hard to find. People i know have found them before. Im not a very lucky person. I had no idea there was a such thing as a white clover.
ReplyDeletei have never found a four leaf clover. I think it would be interesting to find one because they're rarely found, but i doubt you'd get good luck. For some reason i just dont believe that to be true.
ReplyDeleteI have never found a four leaf clover so i don't know if they are good luck. I don't know anyone that has found them either. People claim to have found them but if there are 10,000 three leaf clovers to every four leaf clover then they most likely haven't.
ReplyDeleteI've never found a four leaf clover before and I know very few who ever have. When I've thought I found one, I noticed it really wasn't and was just one that had a little extra leaf like the passage said. I didn't know that there are 10,000 three leaf clovers to every four. No wonder I haven't found one yet.
ReplyDeleteI've found a bunch of four-leaf clovers. Where I live, clovers just grow all over the place and, while it takes time, it's pretty easy to find four-leaf clovers. But even so, the ratio of 10,000:1 is a bit extreme sounding, but not too much to where it's hard to believe.
ReplyDeleteit is interesting to finally know why the finding of four leaf clover is so far and rare and to know there are various types of four leaf clovers and other numbers of clovers to and that it is easy to get confused on if its a four leaf clover are just a clover with extra leaf and knowing they need right environment setting I thought they just grow like leave cause I always see them
ReplyDeleteIts pretty cool that the leaf is so rare to be found. Ive never personally found one, but I never really have looked for one. Plenty of my friends have found them so they cant be that rare.
ReplyDeleteI aint never ever found a dang 4 leaf clover because i just didn't think they existed. My grandma would find them all the time but every time i came around she didn't have nothing to show for it.I don't think they give you good-luck, i think that's a myth. Cause my grandma would've had the best luck in the world if it really did give you good luck.
ReplyDeleteI have never found a 4 leaf clover, but both of my brothers have. I know they are said to have good luck, but i can't find one. I think its cool how they found out why some have four leaves instead of three that is something i never really thought about.
ReplyDeleteBeing Irish so far I've found at least two four-leaf clovers before and I had never really thought about HOW they were formed I kind of just always thought that it was just there. Being said I would probably go with the mutation and environmental. I feel like the two of those occurrences would probably be responsible because the four-leaf clover could have easily been mutated from something in the environment. Maybe something in the soil or contamination and maybe some others weren't affected. All in all though I would say that this is a pretty cool article giving us details and examples on how the four-leaf clover could be formed. I might go check it out myself sometime
ReplyDeletei have never seen one. and its cool how they found out why they have 4 leaves. ive spent a large amount of my childhood trying to find one , i never have even seen one . they must be really rare.
ReplyDeleteI think if you find a four leaf clover you would be lucky because it is rare to find them. I think it is weird that they are considered mutations of three leaf clovers. I wonder if anyone who truly found one was actually lucky.
ReplyDeleteI have never found a four leaf clover, but my sister always find them. I think they are lucky because they are mutated and that doesnt happen often. I just hope that one day i actually find one so i can have good luck!!
ReplyDeleteI used to think that four leaf clovers didn't exist because I could never find one. People are just considered lucky when they find them because of how rare they are. I also have never thought of them as being mutations.
ReplyDeleteI have never found a four leaf clover before but I do think they exist. They are just very hard time find maybe that why they say it is lucky because they are so uncommon time find you are lucky you found one. But to me I don't think know if they really give you luck. I think the only luck you get is finding the four leaf clover. It would be pretty awesome time find a four leaf clover and to see what happens. I wonder if they luck happens when you find it or after you find it? and will they luck ever end?
ReplyDeleteI think it cool they found a gene that make 4 leaf clovers if they are so rare scientists can find to grow them and people that believe in good luck can get one
