Cell Phone Radiation Could Interact With Human Tissues in a Never-Before-Considered Way

More Cell Signal Controversy Steve Kazella via Wikimedia
Los Alamos National Labs is often associated with bombs, and the one it dropped today is no less likely to stir up a firestorm. Figuratively speaking, of course. That simmering controversy surrounding cell phone signals’ effect on biological tissue surfaced again today via a Los Alamos researcher who says the microwaves emitted by cell phones can interact with human tissues in an entirely new way that has yet to be taken into account.
There are obviously two sides to the debate here, one that cites evidence showing that cell phone signals have been shown to influence human behavior and health, and the other which claims that epidemiological evidence shows no indication that cell phone signal exposure correlates to the aforementioned health effects.
But the particularly potent argument for cell phone safety is that microwave photons don’t have enough energy to break chemical bonds. And if they can’t break chemical bonds, then they can’t damage biological tissues. For many physicists, this is case closed.
Bill Bruno, theoretical biologist at Los Alamos, says otherwise. If you want to get into the nitty-gritty science of it, there’s a link to his paper at the bottom of this post. But the basic argument is this: the traditional idea that microwaves aren’t strong enough to affect human tissues only applies when the number of photons in a space equivalent to a cubic wavelength is less than one. When the density is higher, photons can interfere constructively--that is, the effects can compound and interact in stronger ways than they normally could.
Bruno cites optical tweezers as an example. We know that optical tweezers, which use photons to manipulate very small objects like cells, can do damage to structures. That’s well documented. And that’s because the photons are piled on--the more photons, the stronger the force (and the more potential damage).
Optical tweezers work in the infrared generally, but it raises questions about whether the same is true of photons in the microwave range because one thing is clear: the density of photons per cubic wavelength in cell signals is many orders of magnitude greater than one. So, Bruno says, there is a mechanism by which damage could occur, and the conditions for that mechanism to work are present around cell phones and cell towers.
Now, this doesn’t mean that microwave photons are necessarily scrambling your neurons, but it does add another wrinkle to the debate and is cause for concern and further evaluation. At the very least, Bruno says the argument that microwaves can’t achieve the strength to break chemical bonds is no longer enough to discount the idea that cell phones are harmful to biological tissue.
Consider this controversy far from resolved. The full paper is available here.

  1. This is weird to think about. Its weird to think that cell phone radation could affect your body. I don't know if it completely true cause i dont know if i could believe it. If it was true then my body would be maybe messed up cause i always use my phone.

  2. I dont think that cell phone radiation could affect the tissues in our body. Because how would it and what would it do. It couldnt tear them because t has to go past the skin first.

  3. This is an interesting topic because I am always on my phone. But I dont think this could affect our tissue. Phones have been around longer than most of us and i have never heard of this. Chemically i dont think this is possible. As Ronnie said "It has to past the skin first" (In other words it has to pass through our skin before it reaches our tissue). Chemically if it can hurt tissue I believe that it should be able to damage the skin. But since it cant i believe it doesnt pose a threat. I am constantly on my cellular devise and i have nothing wrong with me, not that i know of. If it is true this seems like a long term process that will take a long time to hurt us so i dont think we have anything to fear or worry about.

  4. I dont believe that cell phone radiation could affect the tissues in our body. Im on my phone alot and i dont believe it has a effect on me so far. It could be a long term thing, but i doubt it could effect anyone. Thats like saying watching to much tv can damage you tissues.

  5. I hope this isn't true. I am always on my phone so my body would be pretty messed up by now. It's scary to think that something we use in our everyday life could do this. If this is true they need to find a way to fix it.

  6. This is resaerch that can affect alot of people. Most people I know of, including myself, uses a cellphone alot so this can impact me aswell.Hopefully the effects have no negative damage.

  7. I hope that if this is true cell phone radiation doesn't have a big impact because my phone is always with me. I have heard that cell phone radiation could cause cancer but I don't know if that's true. I don't think that the effects of the radiation are severe enough to affect our tissue or cause major problems.

  8. If the phone radiation ever does affect the human body, a lot of people are in trouble because many people use cell phones. But the effects it cause I don't believe are very suvere or deadly to humans at all. I really hope not anyways.

  9. i hope this isn't true, because we all use cell phones and to think a cell phone can mess up your body is scary. i would think by now it would have some type of affect on our body so i hope this isn't true.

  10. My mom is always complaining about cell phone radiation because I constantly have my phone with me, as sad as it is. I don't really believe that it can affect me, but I do have really bad headaches all the time. It runs in my family, but I've been to the doctors for it and a cause could be cell phone radiation. It makes sense, but I still don't know if I believe it 100%.

  11. This reminds me of the theory going around that cell phones can cause breast cancer. But in truth, I can easily say I believe this is possible. I read somewhere that cell phones can cause aches in some body parts.

  12. I don't really believe that cell phone waves can effect our behavior. Through out the years cell phones have improved a lot but not to change a persons behavior. This is just a theory. There is really no evidence to show how this can effect peoples behavior

  13. If this were to be true, most teenagers with phones would have cellular damage. That would be evidence in itself because cell phone use is time consuming. As much as we use our phones, little damage at a time would pile up, right ?

  14. I think this is kinda odd. If cell phones effect our body because of the microwaves wouldn't other things like a radio, a microwave itself, computers, TV's, etc. effect us too? I don't think that this is true because I've had a cell phone for a while know and if it effected our body wouldn't we know it? Would there be symptoms?

  15. I think this is realistic because doctors use radiation in many ways to help are fight caner and other stuff but it also cause the person to feel sick and make body worse but its weird how powerful the radiation is in such a small device like are every day phone that is use for everything this days

  16. I think that this could affect humans because no matter where you are you always see people on their phones. But to me, this don't sound realistic but i guess it could be if scientists can prove it.

  17. I hope this isn't true because I'm on my phone all the time so that would mean I would be effected by the radiation. I don't really believe this because nothing really has changed from it. If this were true there would be some symptoms or side effects. If this were true we would have heard about someone having it and getting treatment for it.

  18. I hope phone radiation is not true because lots of people use there phones. Its scary to think about this. If this is true i think they should have find a way to fix this problem. I think phones can affect you but not in this way. I think they should have checked of cell phones had any affect on our body when phones first came out.

  19. I'm always on my phone for one reason or another so if this is true it would be horrible! I think they should do more tests and come up with more evidence. If this is true they should find a way to fix it quickly. This could be bad because many people spend there life's on there phones.

  20. I think that this could affect humans because no matter where you are you always see people on their phones..I honest hope this is not true because I'm always on my phone for no reason and if it's true it would be horrible.

  21. I think is actually scary and weird because Like Maria and My follow classmates said I'm always on my phone and not just me this whole generation is. I hope that they do research and do more test because now days people use they phone to do everything with. And it would freak me out If this became true.
